Welcome to Catherine Dunn - Animal Artist

My paintings are created using soft pastel which is a beautiful medium for capturing the texture and beauty of all animals. The finished commissions are supplied framed and ready to hang. When painting double or group portraits I can work from separate photographs and combine them to produce the required composition. Backgrounds can also be added from separate images yours or mine. Simple shaded backgrounds are included in the price. There is an additional charge for specific or detailed backgrounds. (please refer to price list).

There are several ways to commission a painting. Ideally I like to meet the animal(s) and take photographs specifically for the painting. This enables me to spend some time getting to know them and to take note of true coat colour and any peculiaritie,s be it in form or behaviour that makes your animal unique. There is a small charge of £20 for photography.You will receive a disc containing all images along with your finished painting. I am able do this within a radius of approximately 30 miles but I am willing to travel further if my travel expenses are covered. You are then welcome to visit my studio to view your photographs, choose a frame and discuss your commission further. I have portfolios with photographs of hundreds of commissions available to view.

If you would like to provide your own photographs , maybe if your animal is deceased, due to distance or you simply have a favourite photograph please ring or email to confirm your place and then send or email your images. Please send a selection of images for me to refer to as well as your favourite image, writing any notes or preferences on the back or within the email. When I have received your photographs I will telephone you to discuss your painting. A deposit of 25% will secure your place.

Taking your own photographs- If you would like some advice please feel free to telephone me –but here are some simple tips;

Photograph in natural light. For dark coloured horses, if you would like a full gleam on your horses coat photograph in full sunlight. With white or grey animals it is usually better to photograph is shade so the detail does not bleach out. If photographing dogs or smaller animals photograph at their level. If photographing a full bodied shot try to take a close up of the head in the same pose. If sending your own photographs please send good quality JPEG images.
